Timing of Surgery for Dogs with Thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disc Extrusion

In this Journal Club Webinar, Drs. Sophie Martin and Tom Harcourt-Brown from the neurology team at Langford Vets, University of Bristol, discuss their latest publication on "Same-day surgery may reduce the risk of losing pain perception in dogs with thoracolumbar disc extrusion". For non-ambulatory dogs spinal decompression is the recommended treatment choice, but evidence is lacking to support whether early or delayed decompression is superior. Specifically for dogs without pain perception, there is no evidence that a delay of up to 48 hours is associated with a poorer prognosis. There is also growing evidence in human medicine that surgical procedures performed out-of-hours carry an increased rate of complication The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyse and compare those dogs undergoing same-day or delayed spinal decompression.
